Eye Care Services by Optometrists
OHIP-Covered Eye Exams
• Children aged 0 to 19 years: one full exam annually; follow-ups as required
• Seniors aged 65 and above: one full exam annually; follow-ups as required
• Adults aged 20 to 64 years: one full exam annually; follow-ups as required for:
• Patients with diabetes, glaucoma, cataract, retinal disease, amblyopia, visual field defects, corneal disease, recurrent uveitis, or optic pathway disease.
• Patients presenting with a requisition from a physician or nurse (with an extended certificate of registration) for a medically necessary condition
Services Not Covered by OHIP
• Additional full exams within the eligibility period for insured patients
• Routine exams for healthy adults 20-64
• Eye exams required by employers, ministry of transport, or other third parties
• Refractive surgery pre- and post-operative assessments
• Eyeglasses and contact lenses
• Contact lens fitting and progress checks
• Low vision assessments and Vision Therapy
Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS)-Covered Services
• Eye exams are covered every 2 years for patients under the Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program
• Basic prescription eyewear
• Medically necessary contact lenses (when glasses do not correct vision optimally)
Other Government Programs
• Assistive Devices Program: An Ontario program that provides funding for visual aids for patients with low vision (a condition
• Veterans Affairs: a Federal program covering eye exams and eyewear for veterans and their families
• First Nations and Inuit Health Branch: a Federal program covering eye exams and eyewear for First Nations and Inuit patients
• Interim Federal Health Program: a program providing limited coverage, by pre-approval, for refugees with meeting certain eligibility criteria.
